Aims of the Programme
The aim of this programme of courses is to develop and consolidate your knowledge of assessment and management of the patient with Parkinson’s Disease. The programme is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
Outline
This programme consists of five separate online courses each with their own focus and as you progress through the course your knowledge will build on the previous course content. Let’s take a look at the available courses.
Parkinson’s disease is a complex neurodegenerative condition that severely affects quality of life. It is estimated that seven to ten million people worldwide are living with Parkinson’s. Physiotherapists have an integral role to play in the management of this condition working alongside other healthcare professionals. In this course you will learn about the clinical stages of Parkinson’s, criteria of diagnosis, associated symptoms and available treatment options.
Assessment of Parkinson’s Disease
PD patients will often have difficulty walking, balancing and often experience falls. For these individuals changing position is challenging and maintaining a good posture is a major difficulty. Physiotherapists play a vital role in supporting people with PD. In order to take the appropriate rehabilitation measures, a thorough assessment of the person’s physical limitations should be undertaken. This course includes the primary elements of PD assessment, relevant outcome measures, a model for falls assessment and prediction and also important parts of the European Physiotherapy Guidelines for PD.
Management of Parkinson’s Disease
PD is a complex disease which has a wide and varied effect on each patient. This often challenges the physiotherapist when designing an appropriate individualised management program. After learning about PD assessment in the previous course you are now about to dive into an intervention framework that considers primary and secondary symptoms of Parkinson’s. In this course you will learn the aims of physio in PD management and practical intervention strategies to help your patients fulfill their maximum capabilities.
PD Outcome Measure Case Study
In the previous courses you learned more about Parkinson’s disease (PD), assessment, and treatment. In this course you will learn from the best as Dr Bhanu Ramaswamy will share the assessment, treatment planning and post treatment results of an example patient. From this case study you will learn how to apply specific outcome measures when assessing a patient with PD, view case study videos and compare your assessment with notes made by Dr Ramaswamy.
PD Treatment Planning Case Study
A typical case presentation of Parkinson’s Disease (PD) may not always be straightforward. Your PD patient may come to your clinic with simple MSK symptoms asking for help. Your role is to assess your patient thoroughly with a solid base of understanding of PD to design an effective management programme. In this case study you will get to learn from Dr Bhanu Ramaswamy on how to think when you are assessing and creating a treatment plan for a PD patient.
