How Well Do Clinical Pain Assessment Tools Reflect Pain in Infants?

Rebeccah Slater, Anne Cantarella, Linda Franck, Judith Meek, Maria Fitzgerald.

This study evaluates whether the premature infant pain profile (PIPP) score correlates with the results given by near-infrared spectroscopy measuring cortical haemodynamic activity in 12 infants, aged 25–43 wk postmenstrual,  following a clinically required heel lance in 33 occasions. It shows that in 10 out of 33 occasions, the results did not correlate and concludes that pain in infants might be underevaluated.
