This study evaluates whether the premature infant pain profile (PIPP) score correlates with the results given by near-infrared spectroscopy measuring cortical haemodynamic activity in 12 infants, aged 25–43 wk postmenstrual, following a clinically required heel lance in 33 occasions. It shows that in 10 out of 33 occasions, the results did not correlate and concludes that pain in infants might be underevaluated.
