Diagnosis of Fall Risk in Parkinson Disease: An Analysis of Individual and Collective Clinical Balance Test Interpretation

Dibble L, Christensen J, Ballard DJ, Foreman KB

The symptoms associated with Parkinsons Disease (PD) often leave patients at risk of falls. This study aimed to assess the accuracy of predicting a fall risk based on one test, compared to multiple tests.

70 people with PD participated in this study. Balance tests were carried out during initial assessments. Validity indices were calculated for individual tests and compared with validity indices calculated for a combination of multiple tests.

The interpretation of balance tests collectively gave fewer false negative results and raised the probability of correct identification of potential 'fallers'.
