What are the needs of patients following discharge from hospital after an acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD

Semi-structured interviews and focus groups consisting of 25 patients aimed to identify patient needs following discharge from hospital after an exacerbation of COPD. Interviews were conducted 7 days and 3 months post discharge.

Results showed high levels of depression and anxiety amongst patients. Fears were associated with further 'attacks' and worry about the provision of social and medical care, particularly the provision of home oxygen.

An emphasis needs to be placed on not only the medical welfare of patients but also on psychological well-being. There appears to be a need for improved follow up in the community including better access to pulmonary rehabilitation and teachings of self -management strategies.
