Legg-Calvé-Perthes Disease: A Review of Cases with Onset Before Six Years of Age

Scott B. Rosenfeld, MD, John A. Herring, MD and John C. Chao, BA.

This Level III study reviews the prognosis for children in whom Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease develops before the age of six years, based on a cohort of 172 children, with 188 affected hips. The results, based on the course of the disease and the final clinical and radiographic outcomes on 164 typical hips in 160 patients, were positive in 80%. However, children  between the ages of four years and five years and eleven months with a B/C or C lateral pillar classification of involvement have a less favorable prognosis, no matter the treatment.
