Role of acupuncture in the treatment of insomnia: A comprehensive review

Kalavapallia, R., and Singareddy, R.

This study considered the literature surrounding the role of acupuncture in the treatment of insomnia, a common sleep disorder which can have devastating socioeconomic consequences.  Most patients are treated with pharmacological solutions for insomnia, however long term use of these medications has been questioned as having potential side effects.

A systematic review of the literature surrounding acupuncture for insomnia was conducted, including clinical case series, open and randomised clinical trials.  Many of the studies had methodological flaws, however the all consistently indicate significant improvement in insomnia with acupuncture.

Further studies with robust methodology and large sample size are needed to fully assess the use of acupuncture with this client group, and explore the possible mechanisms underlying how acupuncture affects sleep and sleep disorders.
