The Effect of Corrective Taping of the Patella on Patella Position as Defined by MRI

Lee Herrington

This study aims to measure the amount of lateral patella displacement following taping of the patella for patteofemoral pain syndrome.  MRI scans determining lateral patella displacement were taken at 0, 10, and 20 degrees of knee flexion, prior to and after patella taping. The results suggest a significant reduction in LPD (p < 0.05) at all joint angles.  The author concludes that although the actual change in displacement of the patella was small it might be sufficient to bring about the biologically significant changes resulting in the reported reduction in pain.
