All you need to understand about the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF)

It is a big day at Physiopedia Plus (Plus): Understanding the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) Programme has been completed and released!

In partnership with the USAID-funded ReLAB-HS, five fantastic courses are presented by Dr Patricia Saleeby – an international expert in the ICF who was involved in the World Health Organization’s ICIDH (International Classification of Impairments, Disabilities, and Handicaps) revision process that led to the development of the ICF.

Plus’s Understanding the ICF Programme includes:

  1. Introduction to the ICF
  2. ICF Educational and Clinical Resources
  3. Overview of the ICF and Clinical Practice
  4. ICF and Application in Clinical Practice
  5. Applying the ICF in Health Policies and Administration

More than 2000 people from all over the globe have engaged in this programme so far. Clinicians and practitioners worldwide say that the introductory course “was inspiring” and provided “an in-depth knowledge of what it is and how to apply it in my clinical practice.” According to the participants, this newly gained knowledge about the ICF is so powerful that it “will help you decide on appropriate treatment and improve good outcomes and quality of rehabilitation services!

The ICF programme allows clinicians to see “how important it is to know the whole patient and everything that affects them”, and has improved clinical practice for many.

The programme has impacted our practice at Physiopedia Plus as well. Our Plus course pages are being updated to include ICF assessment tools and ICF-related case studies. We have also reviewed and revised existing open access Physiopedia pages related to the ICF and added information on ICF assessment tools to the Physiopedia pages related to clinical assessment and conditions.

This programme is appropriate for everybody working in the rehabilitation field – and has been completed by physiotherapists, occupational therapists and rehabilitation specialists so far, to name a few. It is simple and easy to understand yet covers all aspects of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health. No matter how many years of clinical experience you have, you will learn about the ICF’s potential for your practice.
