Continuing Collaboration with IFOMPT

We are pleased to be continuing our collaboration with the International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Physical Therapists (IFOMPT) for another year.  IFOMPT’s mission is worldwide promotion of excellence and unity in clinical and academic standards for manual/musculoskeletal physiotherapists, which compliments the aims of Physiopedia.  In order to bring this about, IFOMPT aims to:

  • Promote and maintain the high standards of specialist education and clinical practice in manual/musculoskeletal physiotherapists.
  • Promote and facilitate evidence based practice and research amongst its members.
  • Communicate widely the purpose and level of the specialisation of manual/musculoskeletal physiotherapists amongst physiotherapists, other healthcare disciplines and the general public.
  • Work towards international unity/conformity of educational standards of practice amongst manual/musculoskeletal physiotherapists.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with individuals within the organisation and with other organisations.

The Federation represents groups of Manipulative Physiotherapists around the world who have completed stringent post-registration/post-graduation specialisation programs in the field of neuro-musculoskeletal disorders. Orthopaedic Manual Therapy is a specialised area of physiotherapy / physical therapy for the management of neuro-musculoskeletal conditions, based on clinical reasoning, using highly specific treatment approaches including manual techniques and therapeutic exercises. Orthopaedic Manual Therapy also encompasses, and is driven by, the available scientific and clinical evidence and the biopsychosocial framework of each individual patient.

“IFOMPT regards Physiopedia as an ideal partner to promote the physical therapy profession among the wider health care community and the public on a global scale and to disseminate topical information.” said Ingrid du Toit, Office Manager of IFOMPT. “As per the mission of IFOMPT, Physiopedia supports educational projects from around the world and it provides universal access to a large body of knowledge. It provides an accessible vehicle to enhance communication with the ultimate goal of improving patient care and make a positive contribution to global health.”

Physiopedia established the partnership with IFOMPT at the 2012 IFOMPT Conference in Quebec where Physiopedia provided online reporting from the conference through the social media. Physiopedia set up a blog which reported live from the conference and in this way attendees and those not able to attend were kept up to date of developments. This provided a great dissemination vehicle and instant reporting from the event.

We are looking forward to future collaboration with IFOMPT and also to the next conference in Glasgow, UK in 2016!
