One thing I like to play with in the physical therapy world is the idea of the permeable brick wall. It is a term used by Maitland Instructors. For me it means to know the research and what is deemed evidence based but on the other side of the permeable brick wall is what I see clinically. This is how so many excellent techniques, methods and technology is used. While many methods have not been proven, they have been reproducible and useful in the clinic. If it’s worked in 20 of my last 20 clients with similar signs and symptoms then maybe I should do it on the 21st client who walks in with the same sort of signs and symptoms. Leave it to researchers to prove it works later. What do we truly know to be proven anyway. Really??? So much is really not known and what we do know is really just in relation to something else we don’t know. Science is always disproven itself. Mostly it’s our best guess. Study, Read, practice and be open to what shows up is how I look at it. Ralph Havens San Diego
