NLC Clinical Leadership Fellowships

A Unique Opportunity

The new Clinical Leadership Fellowship is the only scheme designed for clinicians in all areas of the NHS across England.  The Clinical Leadership Fellowships programme will help the National Leadership Council to transform leadership capacity and capability across the NHS, and it offers you a unique opportunity to develop your personal leadership skills, career, and contribution.  If selected, you will have access to a bespoke leadership development course that will support your clinical service and directly benefit patients.

Who should apply

The primary requirement is a demonstrable talent for leadership and an ambition to develop leadership skills in the service of the NHS. Your application should show evidence of your leadership talent either at your place of work or elsewhere. It is your potential as a leader that we will be assessing.  We are keen to attract people from as diverse a range of backgrounds and professions as possible, working for an NHS funded service in England.

This programme has been designed for practicing clinicians, who have leadership responsibilities and have suitable sponsorship. We believe that this would normally connect to roles which are at least equivalent to Agenda for Change Band 7 (and above) or Junior Doctor level or above interested in furthering their leadership development. Finally, your current role should provide you with the opportunity to make use of your newly developed leadership skills in a day to day work environment. Please note we do not wish to limit this opportunity but we hope you recognise how important it is to develop the criteria to ensure a robust and efficient process can be applied.

You and your employer must be prepared to commit you to a total of forty eight days (approximately) over a period of nine months. This will include eighteen days of dedicated in-service project time to work on a service improvement activity. Applicants will also be expected to commit to private study time. Funding is available to support the Fellow to take time out from their substantive role for their project improvement.

To find out more about the course please see ‘about the Fellowships’

The call for applications is now open. The deadline for completed applications is 8th August 2011. We advise you to register as soon as possible as the closing date 8th August may be brought forward subject to the volume of applications received. If you have already registered your interest, you will automatically be kept informed of any such changes by email in advance.

A note about ‘leadership’ and ‘management’. You don’t have to hold a management position to be a leader and you may never wish to be a manager, although some people successfully combine leadership with management. However, the two roles do require different skills and behaviours. So, regardless of your current status, if you aspire to lead others and you have a passion to improve an aspect of NHS service, a Clinical Leadership Fellowship will help you to develop the skills you need.
